Peptic Ulcer Disease May be Cured with Olive Oil and The Mediterranean Diet

By Ray Darken These days the Mediterranean diet is no secret and neither are many of its noted benefits. However, it is best known for reducing the risk of heart disease, minimising the risk of cancer, and assisting greatly with nutrition and weight loss. In western countries, the Mediterranean diet has literally 'taken off' as a natural weight control diet. Often used as an alternative to weight loss tablets, fad diets and drugs. As a weight loss diet it is usually slower to show results due to its high nutritional levels and extremely tasty and versatile recipes. However, doctors and nutritionists alike increasingly laud the healthy diet almost in every corner of the globe. Some, more comical critics, will argue it's better known for its taste sensations. Moreover, although many argue where its actual strengths lie as an age old but highly researched and verified diet, it seems that its application is increasingly helpful in even more troubled areas of health. Highly regarded already, the Mediterranean diet and it's well known almost iconic ingredient, extra virgin olive oil, may be in a new focus for preventing, reducing and treating Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) say some researchers in Spain. This would be of great benefit to the many millions who already suffer from peptic ulcers and gastritis every year across the globe. Brenes & colleagues demonstrated through laboratory experiments that under simulated conditions the healthful phenolic compounds in extra virgin olive oil remained stable in an acidic environment (the stomach) for hours. Using laboratory cultures, those substances had a strong antibacterial effect against 8 strains of H. pylori, including antibiotic-resistant strains. Manuel Brenes and colleagues have cited previous studies showing green tea, cranberry juice and certain other natural foods can inhibit the growth of H. pylori (which infects the stomach lining), this has lead researchers to encourage the consumption of these food types. It seems that studies on olive oil, however, have not been tested on H. pylori, This was noted in a study scheduled for the February 21 in an issue of ACS' Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, a biweekly publication. As a result, they said, "It is now possible to consider extra virgin olive oil as a protective agent for gastric cancer and peptic ulcers". It has yet to be confirmed.
