By Scot McKay Every day I talk to men and women who are facing their fair share of the challenges that face nearly all of us at one time or another in the dating world. That's to be expected, and is part of the human experienceat least nowadays it is. But manfrom time to time I encounter stories and/or situations that are definitely non-standard. Particularly interesting are the brouhahas men and women get themselves into that involve clear passage into the realm of "cognitive dissonance", which is essentially the concept of continuing to believe that something is the case when the evidence is overwhelming that such is indeed NOT the case. And it's that great desire to have someone we are practically obsessed with "love and accept us for who we are" which leads us into this particular brand of turmoil when it comes to dating. Every time. Unfortunately, when we want so badly to believe that someone who is indifferent (or even flatly uninterested) is going to accept us and become romantically attracted to us we open the door to being manipulated, trifled with or flat-out USED. Here are some specific scenarios that I have seen in real life. If you can personally relate to any of what follows it's time to WAKE UP and realize that someone you have the "hots" for is being at best opportunistic with you or-at worst-is going to milk his or her relationship with you for all you are worth. 1) Financial Appeals One time a few years ago I picked up a woman at her home to take her out. She informed me that she would need a few more minutes because she was IMing with a guy two thousand miles away. She said it was important because although she had no interest in ever really meeting this man he "sent her money all the time". So she was essentially leveraging her "feminine wiles" for purely ulterior financial motives (which I referred to immediately as "Typing For Dollar$"). Inexplicably, the lonely guy on the other end of the conversation let this go on and actually sent her checks. Predictably, this same woman woke up a few days later to an empty driveway, her SUV having been repossessed. I'll never forget the phone call where she demurely purred a request that I "lend her $17,000". I may never forget that phone call, but I forgot her. Fast. 2) Requests For Favors Unfortunately, situations like unto what I'm about to describe are not rare. Back in my early twenties I lived with several roommates, all of whom attracted women easily and often. One day I came home and a pleasant young woman with a particularly sweet personality was nearly finished with what must have been a monumental task of having deep-cleaned our entire house from top to bottom. Speechless, I asked what prompted her to do such a thing. "Oh", she said, "Your roommate hired me to be your maid." It turns out he "forgot" to pay her the paltry five bucks (!?) agreed upon. Yet, she was back again the next week for more of the same. My roommate never so much as asked her out. Ever. And I bet you thought I was going to cite a woman doing this sort of thing to a guy, didn't you. Wrong. This is not a gender-specific deal. 3) Invitations To Spend Time And Resources What if someone invites you to go somewhere or do something that's particularly expensive and/or far away? What if the same person who invited you casually expects you to foot the bill and/or do the driving? I believe the answers to these deep questions are rhetorical. Yet, it's amazing how many single people have a Blackberry full of willing minions. 4) "Coincidental" Timing This bullet point is particular appropriate to discuss with Valentine's Day rapidly approaching. Old flames have a way of flaring up in early February. There's just something about Valentine's Day that "ignites" dread and frustration there, causing them to pick up the phone. "HEYyou've been on my mind lately for some reason and I kind of miss you" Yeah, yeah. Next. The Valentine's Day factor here is readily transparent. But question the intentions of anyone who disappeared off the planet only to suddenly resurface later with a new agenda. No matter what the calendar says. 5) Sexual Bargaining You would think, were stereotypes accurate, that men would bargain FOR sex and women would bargain WITH sex. Well, allow me to be the first to inform you that such thinking doesn't necessarily apply anymore. Beware the particular danger of being blindsided by this brand of manipulation when the roles are reversed. That's what it is, too-manipulation. And let me tell you, this can creep up on you with such a quickness that when the realization of what is going on whacks you upside the head you don't know whether to stare wide-eyed in the mirror in disbelief or to just burst out in laughter. I hear at least one guy reading this muttering to himself that he should be so lucky to be "manipulated" as such. To each his own. But once you get total control of your dating life like I've been talking about around here my guess is that you'll develop higher standards. Nice. 6) Pregnancy "False Alarms" One time I called things off with a woman who I had been spending some time with. That arrangement apparently didn't meet her needs. Three days later she called me up claiming that she was "pregnant with my child" and that she was "keeping the baby". I had never had sex with this woman. And no, I am not making this up. If you are left slack jawed at the reality that the above hijinks go on in the real world, count yourself fortunate to have the wherewithal to exercise common wisdom in your own dating life. If you can relate, however, get out of such a poisonous arrangement and do it NOW. And a final thought, which I would be remiss if I excluded from this conversation. If you are looking in the mirror and realizing that you are in fact the perpetrator of such preposterous dealings with people in your own life, my only message to you is that today is the day to start deserving what you want. Users and manipulators will get used and manipulated in return along the path of a frustrating and fruitless journey to find a partner with whom he or she can enjoy a mutually respectful relationship. By Stephen Kaye Well, I haven't been in this situation for some years now, thankfully, but it's good to reflect on old writings, and this is still true today, as it was then ... Probably the hardest part of being unemployed is not knowing when things are going to change for the better. That illusory hope for the future which encourages: "Only a little longer to go and I can get a raise, promotion or big commission deal - is simply not there. So as the bills creep up, (because however you try to work it, you never have quite enough to go 'round), and as the things you can't have or just really don't need become an ever-increasing weight on that other list (things you are going to pay for, sort out and get, once you have a job), you find that little by little your life is becoming smaller and smaller, and that you're in quite a trap. BENEFITS You can't take just any job, because once you are back in work you lose whatever small relief you've been able to obtain from rates and other bills and once again these and the mortgage will be all yours to pay in full from your salary package. If you were in a well-paid position before, the chances are that your outgoings are still potentially high, and that outweighs the merits of taking just any job. So you need a position with a salary similar to your previous earnings. Or more - because now you have those other unemployment benefits called debts. "Getting a job is a job in itself", say the Employment Service. It is indeed. Probably the hardest job of all because there are no guarantees no bonuses for effort, no overtime, and certainly no pay cheque at the end of the month. RESPONSES You want to see my job search file. You really do. I went through it a few days ago and found that this year I have written over 90 letters, filled in 26 application forms, made over 95 telephone calls chasing up hopeful chances and attended 19 interviews. To - date I have received an abundant supply of straight-off-the-floppy-disc form letters which in so many words say - "Thanks, but no thanks". There's a word-processing programme which all personnel officers in the world use to reply to interviewees who didn't get the job. It reads: "Thank you very much ... unfortunately ... candidate quality very high ... difficult decision ... keep your details on file ..." I have a suggestion for Personnel Officers: Why not have a form letter to send out to unsuccessful applicants which simply says - "Thanks, but no thanks!" I'd understand that far better than the patronising nonsense which spasmodically hits my postbox. (That is, where any response at all is forthcoming!) OPTIONS Options? Yes, there are options. Self - employment, working from home, winning the lottery, retrain ... That's a good one! Retrain! say the Employment Service, but it's not quite so simple. For instance, how do you gain enough income in a new starting-at-the-bottom career to pay all your bills for the time it will take you to become as proficient as you were in your last field?
Working from home is another option, so is self-employment, but the same question applies. FACTS The facts as I see them are simple and they are threefold: 1: There are far more people than there are jobs. 2: The better you are at your job, the lower your chances of redundancy. 3: The age of full employment until retirement age is over. 4: If you spend all your benefits on scratch cards you'll be up the creek. Unemployment can change your life, anyone without a job will second that, but I'd like mine changed a little more right now, in the direction of some good hard cash! By Karen Marinelli A current floral industry buzzword is boxed flower program. This refers to the practice of selling flowers to the consumer in a box, normally through distribution channels other than the traditional retail florist. Some boxed flowers come directly from growers, some come from order fulfillment centers. In all cases, the flowers are delivered by a freight service such as Fed ex. Big players in the boxed flower program game are Proflowers, Growers Flowers, Flowers by Martha, and, perhaps surprisingly, FTD. Traditional florists and the businesses that support them, such as traditional wholesale florists, are rightfully concerned about the competition they are receiving from vendors who sell flowers this way. They are also concerned about the effect these flowers are having on the consumer flower markets perception of value. The fear is that if sub-standard quality flowers and floral services are being sold, the overall demand for flowers will fall; that the boxed flower programs are giving flowers in general a bad name. According to an FTD consumer survey, florists believe that consumers who receive boxed flowers are disappointed in the quality, price and service. However, consumers asked the same questions respond overwhelmingly that they are more than satisfied with their flower buying and receiving experience through boxed flower programs. Perhaps, the florists are responding to good science that shows that the single most important factor in prolonging the eventual vase life of flowers is the cold chain. In other words, flowers kept cold from post-harvest to home will perform best. In boxed flower programs, flowers leave the farm or order fulfillment center via a shipping company that does not have refrigeration. Flowers are generally out of the cold for 24 hours before reaching the recipient. I would challenge florists to consider how many hours their flowers are out of the cold chain before the consumer receives them. Do their flowers sit in buckets in their design room? Do completed arrangements sit in the garage waiting to be delivered? Are their delivery vans, and the delivery vans of their suppliers refrigerated? It is my assertion that flowers delivered in boxes and flowers delivered by florists have equal chances of good performance, provided everything goes well at each stop along the distribution channel from farm to home. Tremendous effort and pride is taken in the proper care and handling of flowers in the floral industry, however the more hands handling the flowers along the way, the more chance there is for a break in the chain. There are those who charge that boxed flower retailers are using marketing tactics, which mislead consumers to believe they are ordering flowers from a local florist. Should this be found to be the case, the traditional retail florist would certainly have a right to be angry. Laws of this great country generally support a level playing field. Its this nuance of the argument that goes unnoticed by many florists. While FTD loudly fights against those unfair marketing tactics, they are not so quick to mention their own boxed flower program. On the surface, FTD appears to be fighting the battle to protect their retail florist members while it seems to me that they are protecting their own interest as a competitor to those very same traditional retail florists who are their customers. I guess what Im saying is Game on! Both traditional retail florists and boxed flower programs are going concerns in the flower market. I do not believe they need to exist independently of one another. There are services provided by each that are not provided by the other. When you look around at the most successful people in your city, industry, or profession, you will find that they are the ones who are known and respected by the greatest number of people. One of the hallmarks of highly successful men and women, and most self-made millionaires, is that they network continually, everywhere they go and with almost everyone they meet. By learning and developing the skill of networking you can move ahead faster, rise further, and accomplish more in a shorter period of time. Networking should be an integral part of any marketing plan. Networking produces word of mouth, which in turn produces referrals. Every businessperson and professional knows that word of mouth is the most effective and least expensive approach to attracting new business. Yet few people really understand how they can create it. Networking is making contact to establish relationships that can lead to business. Sometimes the path to business is direct; other times it is indirect leading to referrals. Often times the person who you meet at a networking event will know someone else who needs your products or services. Many people go to networking events hoping to business right then and there, but it very rarely works that way. Business is not done directly at networking event. When you attend a networking event, your goal should be to meet two or three people, find a reason to follow-up, and start a relationship. Any future business will come from an indirect referral, someone they know who might need your products or services. Networks often have a greater impact than their size might indicate. Listen to the people you meet to see how you might assist them in what they do. Giving first and giving more than receiving is a very important rule of networking. Contacts to establish relationships that can lead to business, only happen when the relationship is mutually beneficial. Networking is giving first, and then receiving. If one party does all the giving, then the relationship will not last and the networking ends. Networking relationships takes work and cooperation by all parties involved. Networking is not a skill you are born with, it is an acquired skill. It is developed through education, training, and practice. Many business people spend plenty of time trying to network, but very few spend any time trying to learn how to do it correctly. The way you learn to network is by reading books and listening to audio programs about networking, and by talking to other people who network well. And most importantly, practice what you learn. This is wrong. Your goal in networking should not be to pass out business cards. Your goal should be to receive as many business cards as you can. Your goal should be to make as many contacts and get as much information as you can that will lead to increased business. At networking events, make sure your nametag identifies your company or profession. Always carry plenty of well-designed business cards with you. Use the backs of the cards you receive from others to make notes that will help your memory kick in about each individual. And, carry a card case with the cards of other people you network with, so you can hand one to anyone interested in their services. When you attend a networking event, greet people, hand out your card, and then ask for their card. Introduce yourself in a way that is brief, effective, and memorable. Take the time to plan and rehearse your introduction so you can make the most out of your first 60 seconds. Prepare an easy-to-understand overview of what you do, or the product or service you offer. Heres an example of a simple and effective introduction sequence you can use: * Give your name. * Give your business name or profession. * Give a benefit statement about one particular product or service you offer that tells people what you do that benefits others. * Then, get them to talk about themselves, and listen carefully. The key to success in networking is follow-up. Just like any other form of marketing, it takes time to cultivate the relationship before a lead can be converted to a referral or an actual sale. You must follow-up with your new contact with an invitation to coffee, lunch, or an after-hours meeting. Always send a card, note, or e-mail to the people youve met within twenty-four hours after the event. Mentioning some key points from your initial contact in your follow-up note is a great relationship builder. Always remember that the most successful people and companies are those that are the most trusted. Trust doesnt happen overnight. You must gain the confidence of other people by nurturing long-lasting relationships. Only then will you see a steady crop of new customers, referred by the people with whom youve networked. What it really comes down to is this: You can have anything you want in business, or in life, if youre willing to help enough other people get what they want. It is a simple and time-tested universal law. Yet, it is still a mystery to so many people in business.
